I know the Poland game gets a mention in the intro but I reckon it should be in the top 10, probably at the expense of teh Saudi game – it was a loads more important than that match.

    Ken

It’s a fair shout, but England played really well in ‘73 whereas the Saudi game was an embarrassment. The criteria were about more than consequences otherwise it would just be filled with defeats that cost qualification or exits from tournaments.

Hope the intro bit goes some way to acknowledging your valid criticism.

1970 versus Germany. 2-0 up in a World Cup
quarter final – when holders of the trophy?

  4. MD Says:

    Another good call Westprog.
I’ve been called to account by my colleague on this one as I suspect he agrees with you. But here’s my justification.

“It’s a good shout and I did consider it. It didn’t get in because it depended on the definition of a debacle. Losing to West Germany in a World Cup quarter final is not ideal but it’s no disgrace. I wanted to concentrate on the real embarrassments. The games that left you thinking ‘where do we go from here’ as opposed to matches that we cocked up. Ramsey clearly got things wrong but if Banks hadn’t got food poisoning England would have won and probably go on to lose to Brazil in the final. With hindsight it could be in but this was a very good team getting it wrong as opposed to a ‘oh my god I’m ashamed to be English’ performance.”

It certainly went down well at the Walkabout Club but a scoreline of 3-1 to Australia in 2003 must have set teeth grinding.
